Jonathan Matthey (Scotland 1985)
Photographer based in Barcelona.
Graduated from University Of Glasgow, his work focuses on black-and-white portraiture. His last series using analog processes are raw, stripped down, and intentional. A study in human struggle, unresolved angst, and private battles made visible. His portraits are minimal yet ambitious, both in scale and emotional weight. There are no distractions—just grain, contrast, and silence.
Inspired by photographers like Irving Penn, Avedon, and Gordon Parks, and the storytelling of Steve McQueen, his portraits focus on presence over polish.
Matthey’s has garnered recognition from peers across the visual arts. With a focus on raw portraiture and minimal compositions. His practice is defined by an instinctive approach and a commitment to honesty over polish—each frame a study in presence and restraint.
